This Jewish Calendar—complete with candle lighting times, Jewish months and days, scripture readings, and holidays—was created for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. The calendar features stamps from Israel.
The study of stamps is called philately, and collectors are known as philatelists. It is one of the world’s most popular hobbies, with estimates of the number of collectors ranging up to 20 million in the United States alone. Collecting stamps is a fascinating way to learn about a country and each month featured Israeli stamps with a particular theme along with relevant information.
This calendar was extremely successful with all 500,000 copies distributed to customers at the supermarket service desk within days. It was the most requested calendar in A&P’s history.
Coupons in the calendar helped deliver unprecedented sales and an increased basket size during the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
